The role of landscape connectivity in assembling exotic plant communities: a network analysis.

چکیده
Landscape fragmentation and exotic species invasions are two modern-day forces that have strong and largely irreversible effects on native diversity worldwide. The spatial arrangement of habitat fragments is critical in affecting movement of individuals through a landscape, but little is known about how invasive species respond to landscape configuration relative to native species. This information is crucial for managing the global threat of invasive species spread. Using network analysis and partial Mantel tests to control for covarying environmental conditions, we show that forest plant communities in a fragmented landscape have spatial structure that is best captured by a network representation of landscape connectivity. This spatial structure is less pronounced in invasive species and exotic species dispersed by animals. Our research suggests that invasive species can spread more easily in fragmented landscapes than native species, which may make communities more homogeneous over time.

A new method to quantify, monitore and assess ecological structures and functions is the application of graph theory. In ecology, this theory demonstrates its suitable application in assessment of ecological connectivity. Connectivity is the structural attribute of landscape which facilitates the species movement among their habitats. Using graph theory, this paper aims to assess the connectivi...

Modeling of ecological connectivity across landscape is important for understanding a wide range of ecological processes. Modeling ecological connectivity between habitats and incorporating these models into conservation planning require quantifying the effect of spatial patterns of landscape on the degree of habitats connectivity. Recently, concepts from electrical circuit theory have been ad...
متن کاملLandscape connectivity and seed dispersal characteristics inform the best management strategy for exotic plants.
Exotic plant invasions have triggered environmental and economic problems throughout the world. Our ability to manage these invasions is hindered by the difficulty of predicting spread in fragmented landscapes. Because the spatial pattern of invasions depends on the dispersal characteristics of the invasive species and the configuration of suitable habitat within the landscape, a universal mana...
متن کاملChanges in Effective Connectivity Network Patterns in Drug Abusers, Treated With Different Methods
Introduction: Various treatment methods for drug abusers will result in different success rates. This is partly due to different neural assumptions and partly due to various rate of relapse in abusers because of different circumstances. Investigating the brain activation networks of treated subjects can reveal the hidden mechanisms of the therapeutic methods. Methods: We studied three groups o...
متن کاملAssessment and Comparison of Landscape Connectivity in KoozehTopraghi Watershed, Ardabil Province
Following the unbalanced development and overexploitation of the country's watersheds, land fragmentation has become a major concern for the conservation of ecosystem services and land health. For this purpose, the present study was planned to evaluate and compare the landscape connectivity indices of KoozehTopraghi Watershed as one of the ecologically susceptible watersheds located in Ardabil ...
